Statement on Mickey Kearns’ Acceptance of an Unauthorized Donation

Angela Marinucci For Erie County Clerk

“The Erie County Clerk is responsible for handling millions of dollars of the public’s money. The Clerk’s office plays an integral role in so many major aspects of our lives: registering to vote, getting a driver’s license, starting a business, buying a home. The public must have absolute confidence that the documents related to their personal identity and financial lives are being handled by a person of unimpeachable integrity.

“As the Recorder of Record for Erie County, Mr. Kearns’ own financial documents must be beyond reproach. We encourage Mr. Kearns to cooperate fully with any investigation to ensure that public trust is upheld. We further encourage Mr. Kearns to update his financial filing to reflect the returned donation so that he is in compliance with campaign finance laws.

“Even as a first-time candidate, I recognize the importance of being in touch with campaign supporters, particularly to thank them for their generosity – no matter how large or small the amount. Mr. Kearns’ silence and refusal to respond directly raises questions that must be addressed.

“It comes down to a simple matter of trust. Mickey Kearns owes the public a full accounting of what he knows about the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized donation.

“We are focused on our campaign and are incredibly excited about the success we had in the first filing period. I am personally grateful to Council Member Rivera for his unwavering support of our campaign to bring a fresh perspective to the Clerk’s Office. For now, I look forward to continue traveling around the county and hearing about the issues most important to residents.”
